Surry Hills Festival wrap-up
Like many other inner-city types, yesterday was one of the great things about sydney. The surry hills festival is an institution, and a festival highlight every year.
We arrived around 1.00pm to a building crowd and settled in at the 3d world stage for some percussion junction, and a bit of DJ Huwston, who as per usual played some mighty fine music.
It was then time for a wander through the market stalls. We were particularly taken by the works of studio oat and also a t-shirt business in its first season called getunnaked, whose designs were cool. Personally we’d love to see some studio oat t-shirts, but that’s for them to decide!
We did finally settle on an amazing screenprinted hoodie. We didn’t catch the name of the designer, and it appears that she’s still deciding where to let stock her wares. But the gear is only one screen per size, so it’s pretty unique. And $50 was a steal.
Post-retail therapy the Chai tent was calling, and we stayed for the shade, laidback bodega-esque atmosphere, and the food!
DJ Christo at the Lilypad turned out to be a good surprise, with some bassbin heavy dancehall. Meem was good but not as fun as those early evenings in the dome at the newtown festival a few years back.
Spit Syndicate rocked the 3d world stage, and even had me contemplating my first aussie hiphop purchase since meta bass.
But it was Biz set late that was the highlight. Brooding heavy tech house, techno, pounding beats… was a dream and a great way to end a great festival. Thanks to everyone who organised it. Loved it!!
